Finding Employment Opportunities in Bali

Bali has become a popular destination for skilled professionals looking to live and work in a vibrant and dynamic environment. However, job opportunities for expats are limited due to Indonesian regulations in various industries such as requiring businesses to employ ten local workers for every foreign hire.

Job Opportunities in Bali

While the job market for foreigners is small, certain industries are experiencing growth, including:

  • Finance
  • Food & Beverage
  • Hospitality
  • IT & Technology
  • Management
  • Real Estate
  • Sales & Marketing
  • Telecommunications

Important Consideration

Bali is not a place to relocate in search of job opportunities. The market for foreign workers is extremely limited, and most expats moving to Bali do so with a job already secured or as remote workers and entrepreneurs.

Coworking spaces

If you’re ready for a change from your usual villa or café setup, Bali offers an incredible variety of coworking spaces designed for productivity, connection, and community. You’ll find excellent options across the island’s main expat hubs — Uluwatu, Seminyak, Kerobokan, Umalas, Canggu, Ubud, and Sanur — each with its own unique vibe.

Try out a few spaces with trial day passes to discover which environment suits your work style best. Pay attention to the community culture, the age range of members, and the networking opportunities available. Many coworking spaces in Bali host workshops, social events, and professional meetups, making them perfect for freelancers, entrepreneurs, and digital nomads looking to build connections.

Some spaces even offer coliving options, ideal for solo travelers or those seeking a more immersive work-and-travel lifestyle.

For example, Livit Hub in Sanur offers flexible memberships — from daily rates (IDR 140,000–275,000) to monthly packages starting at IDR 1.275 million. Your first day pass is free, making it easy to give it a try.

To further connect with Bali’s thriving digital nomad community, join Facebook groups such as Digital Nomads Bali to find tips, job leads, events, and local insights.

As an Our Year in Bali client, you’ll also enjoy exclusive discounts at top coworking spaces like Livit Hub and Outpost, helping you make the most of Bali’s vibrant remote-work scene.

Working in Indonesia: The Need for a Work KITAS

It’s imperative to understand that you cannot legally work or earn an income in Indonesia without a valid working permit.

A company in Bali may offer you an employment contract and therefore sponsor your working visa.

Alternatively, a visa agent may be able to arrange a working visa in just a few specific work categories such as entertainment, sports, and marketing valid for a period of 6 or 12 months.

This gives you the option to consultant and do various contracts.

Establishing a Business and Securing Work Visa Sponsorship

One way to obtain a work visa is by starting your own business in Bali. Once registered you can then apply for a work KITAS.

Foreigners can establish a foreign-invested limited liability company in Indonesia, known as PT PMA.

Many expats opt for this approach by establishing businesses like restaurants or import-export businesses.

If you dont have a business that requires a commercial address, a virtual office address can be rented for a fee each year.
