Making the Move: Founder Simone’s Journey Helping Families Thrive in Bali

This article is based on a conversation with Simone, founder of Our Year in Bali, from her podcast episode with Bali Life Unfiltered. Here, she shares her experience, tips, and stories about helping families navigate the exciting yet challenging journey of moving to Bali.

Simone remembers the first family she guided through their move to Bali like it was yesterday. “I could see the mix of excitement and nerves in their eyes,” she recalls. “It’s such a huge step to leave everything familiar behind and start fresh in a completely new country.” That moment captured why she started Our Year in Bali: to make the transition smoother for expat families and give them confidence that life in Bali is not only possible but enjoyable.

Before starting the company, Simone had her own journey of discovery. Originally from Australia, she spent years exploring the different corners of Bali and observing the expat community. Over time, she realized that while Bali is magical, moving here comes with its unique set of challenges. “I wanted families to experience the beauty of Bali without the stress and guesswork that often comes with relocating,” she says.

Why Families Choose Bali

According to Simone, families are drawn to Bali for many reasons: the vibrant community, the stunning natural landscapes, and the slower pace of life compared to their home countries. “A lot of families come here thinking it’s all tropical paradise, but there’s more to consider—schools, healthcare, budgeting, daily logistics,” Simone explains. “And that’s where guidance really helps.”

She often hears the same concerns: “Will my kids adjust to a new school? How do I handle healthcare? Can we actually make a life here?” Simone reassures families that these challenges are manageable with the right preparation and support.

A Day in the Life in Bali

Living in Bali brings a rhythm that’s different from what most expat families are used to. “Mornings often start early, with school drop-offs and a quick run to the market,” Simone shares. Many families rely on scooters to get around efficiently, navigating the vibrant streets while avoiding the heavier traffic of cars. Afternoons are a mix of work, playdates, pool swims and community activities, and evenings often wind down with family time at the beach watching the sunset.

Simone emphasizes that while the lifestyle is rewarding, it takes planning. She helps families set up everything from schooling to local services so that their new routine feels natural and stress-free. “It’s about creating a balance where families can enjoy the lifestyle without feeling overwhelmed,” she says.

Challenges and Surprises

Not everything is smooth sailing. Simone admits that moving to a new country comes with unexpected hurdles. “Sometimes it’s small things, like adjusting to a different electricity system or figuring out local regulations. Other times, it’s bigger, like finding the right school for your child.”

She shares stories of families who were surprised by how much adaptation was required but also how resilient they became. “The beauty is seeing them thrive once they settle in. Those early challenges often become the funniest stories later,” she laughs.

Simone’s Advice for Families Considering the Move

For anyone thinking about making the leap to Bali, Simone has practical advice:

  • Plan ahead: Research schools, healthcare, and housing before moving.
  • Stay flexible: Things don’t always go as planned, and that’s okay.
  • Connect with the community: Finding other expats or local families can make the transition easier.
  • Embrace the experience: There’s a lot to learn and enjoy, so stay curious and open-minded.

“Moving to Bali is more than just relocating—it’s an adventure,” Simone says. “And the families who thrive are the ones who approach it with patience, preparation, and a willingness to embrace change.”

Looking Ahead

Simone continues to grow Our Year in Bali, helping more families from around the globe every year. Her vision is simple: to make moving to Bali a joyful, well-supported experience. “I want every family to feel confident that they can create a fulfilling life here, without the stress and uncertainty that often comes with big moves.”

Whether it’s finding the perfect school, navigating local bureaucracy, or simply adjusting to daily life, Simone is there every step of the way. For families dreaming of life in Bali, she offers not just guidance, but reassurance that their dream is achievable.
