Sunrise School Bali: Celebrating 25 Years of Learning and Community

After 25 years, Sunrise School Bali stands not only as a school but as a joyful community — one that continues to grow with purpose and heart. It’s a place where children are encouraged to shine, to care, and to connect deeply with the world around them.

A Joyful 25th Anniversary Celebration

This October, Sunrise proudly celebrated 25 years of learning, growing, and belonging. The milestone was marked with a beautiful evening celebration on October 24th, a gathering of past and present Sunrise families, teachers, and alumni who came together to honour the school’s journey.

The campus came alive with the sparkle of student performances, a lively “Trashion Show” to raise awareness about fast fashion, and heartfelt alumni stories that brought back fond memories of the school’s early days. As the sun set and the live music began, laughter filled the air — it was a night of big smiles, full hearts, and deep gratitude for all that Sunrise has offered children past and present.

A School Built on Heart, Purpose, and Connection

When Sunrise first opened its doors in 2000, its founders dreamed of creating more than just a school. They imagined a place where children could learn with joy and curiosity, where teachers would nurture every part of a child’s being — intellectual, emotional, physical, and social — and where Bali’s rich cultural and natural heritage would be celebrated as part of daily life.

Today, that vision continues to shine brightly. The garden-filled campus still feels more like a home than an institution — alive with the laughter of children, the rhythm of yoga and mindfulness sessions, and the steady hum of exploration, inquiry, and creativity.

A Holistic and International Education in Bali

Sunrise’s holistic approach blends internationally respected curricula with local culture and environmental awareness. The school follows the International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC), the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), and the International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC), providing a seamless educational journey from early childhood through adolescence.

Each term, students dive into rich, thematic units that connect subjects through hands-on, inquiry-based exploration. A unit on “Living Together,” for example, might weave together science experiments, art projects, storytelling, and fieldwork — helping children make meaningful connections between what they learn and the world around them.

Embracing Balinese Culture and Indonesian Values

At the same time, Sunrise honours its home in Indonesia by integrating the national curriculum, teaching Bahasa Indonesia, local culture, and civic values. This thoughtful balance nurtures both global understanding and a strong sense of local identity — an education that is grounded yet expansive, rooted yet open to the world.

Learning Through Nature and Sustainability

A stroll through the campus reveals what makes Sunrise so special. Children tend to vegetable gardens, care for their beehives, and witness firsthand how compost nourishes the earth. Here, nature isn’t a backdrop — it’s a living classroom where sustainability becomes not just a lesson but a way of life.

Nurturing Independence in the Junior High Years

As children grow, so does their independence and sense of purpose. The relaunch of the Junior High Programme (Years 7–9) has brought renewed excitement, offering a thoughtful balance of academic rigour, creativity, and collaboration.

Through the IMYC, students develop self-awareness, leadership, and critical thinking while engaging in real-world experiences like community service projects, outdoor adventures, and initiatives that deepen their understanding of themselves and their impact.

Wellbeing and Mindfulness at the Heart of Learning

At every stage, wellbeing is at the heart of school life. Each morning begins with Circle Time, a calm moment of gratitude and connection. Practices like yoga, mindfulness, and Nonviolent Communication are woven throughout the day, helping students develop empathy, resilience, and emotional balance.

These practices create a culture of kindness and respect that extends far beyond the classroom.

A Supportive Community That Feels Like Family

What families often say about Sunrise is that it feels different — personal, heartfelt, and deeply human. Small class sizes ensure every child is truly seen and celebrated for who they are. Teachers form genuine, caring relationships with their students, fostering a sense of trust that allows children to flourish.

Enrichment Beyond the Classroom

Beyond the classroom, a wide range of after-school activities keeps curiosity alive, from art, dance, and cooking to music, coding, and martial arts. Each programme invites children to explore passions, discover new skills, and experience the simple joy of learning for its own sake.

The Next Chapter: Growing with Purpose and Heart

As Sunrise steps into its next chapter, the spirit of its 25th anniversary celebration continues to echo across campus — in the laughter of children, the dedication of teachers, and the unity of its diverse community.

The school’s heart remains unchanged: a belief that education should nurture the whole child, cultivate empathy and integrity, and inspire a lifelong love of learning.
