Can I bring my dog or cat to Bali?

For many families planning a move to Bali, one question comes up almost immediately: “Can I bring my dog or cat to Bali?”

The thought of relocating to paradise is exciting, but for pet owners, it often comes with a difficult concern. What happens to the dog who has been part of your family for years? What about the cat who has moved countries with you before?

You may have read online that bringing pets to Bali is impossible. Officially, Indonesia has strict regulations regarding the movement of dogs and cats into Bali due to rabies control measures. This often leaves families feeling confused and discouraged.

The good news is that there are established pathways that have helped hundreds of expatriate families successfully reunite with their pets in Bali.

With the right planning, expert guidance, and enough preparation time, bringing your beloved dog or cat to Bali can absolutely be achieved.

Understanding Pet Relocation to Bali

Indonesia’s pet import regulations can be complex and are very different from those in countries such as Australia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United States, or Europe.

Unlike many international destinations, pets cannot simply arrive at Bali’s airport and enter the island immediately. The process involves permits, health documentation, transportation arrangements, and mandatory government procedures that must be carefully coordinated.

This is why most families choose to work with an experienced pet relocation specialist who understands the Indonesian system and can manage the process from start to finish.

How to Bring a Dog or Cat to Bali

Step 1: Initial Consultation (10-12 weeks before arrival)

  • Free personalized assessment of your situation
  • Clear timeline and requirements explained
  • Custom quote based on your pet’s needs

Step 2: Documentation & Preparation

First, we’ll need to collect:

  • Annual and rabies certificates
  • Rabies serology test results
  • Fit-to-fly veterinary letter
  • Copy of your passport

Once we have your complete documentation, our team will apply for the crucial Indonesian import permit.

Important timing note: The permit process takes approximately 6 weeks to complete. Once issued, you’ll have 90 days to enter Indonesia with your pet. This is why starting 10-12 weeks before your planned move is essential.

Step 3: Transportation to Jakarta

Important: Your pet cannot fly directly to Bali. All pets must first arrive in Jakarta for mandatory quarantine processing.

You have two transportation options:

  1. Travel together as excess baggage: Your pet travels on your same flight, registered under your passenger ticket. You’ll collect them from the oversized luggage area upon arrival.
  2. Consigned cargo shipment: Your pet travels separately as cargo freight. They’ll be collected from the cargo terminal area upon arrival.

Our team will advise which option is best for your specific situation and handle all logistics either way.

Step 4: The Final Journey

  1. Expect a 2-3 day government quarantine in Jakarta with regular updates
  2. Negative PCR test confirmation required to move on to Island B
  3. Comfortable air-conditioned van transport to Island B
  4. Safe delivery to your home

FAQ: Common Questions About Pet Relocation to Bali

Q: Is this service legal? A: Our service works within a specialized framework that our partners have developed over 10+ years of operating in Indonesia. While direct pet imports to Bali are officially restricted, our method has successfully relocated hundreds of pets through proper channels.

Q: How much does it really cost? A: The Jakarta-to-Bali portion starts from 36 million IDR (approximately $2,400 USD) per pet. International transport costs vary widely depending on origin country, pet size, and airline. We provide transparent, all-inclusive quotes with no surprise fees.

Q: How stressful is this for my pet? A: Pet comfort is our priority. Animals travel in appropriate carriers, receive regular monitoring, and we minimize transit times whenever possible. Most pets adjust quickly and are back to their normal selves shortly after arrival.

Q: What if I later need to leave Bali with my pet? A: If you’re bringing a pet to Bali, it’s crucial to also consider the rules for returning home. Each country has different re-entry requirements that can be complex and costly if not planned in advance.

In most cases, pets must have a rabies blood test that shows clear results for at least 90 days in Bali before they can be accepted into another country.

For example, pets returning to Australia must first stay for six months in an approved rabies-free country before they are allowed to enter Melbourne for quarantine. Once a pet leaves Australia, it loses its rabies-free status, and strict re-entry requirements apply.

This quarantine period can be done in a kennel or pet-friendly rental, but the process is lengthy and expensive.

Our service includes guidance on these exit and return requirements to help make your pet’s journey as smooth as possible.

Q: Do you handle exotic pets or just cats and dogs?
A: No, we specialise in cats and dogs only.

Q. I already live in Bali and just need help bringing my pet here to join me. Can you assist with that?
A: Yes, if you are already living in Bali and wish to bring your pet to the island then write to us via our contact us form.
