With backgrounds in wellness and fitness, Charlotte and Dan had always been drawn to a lifestyle that blended purpose, presence, and adventure. So when the timing aligned, they sold nearly everything they owned and stepped into the unknown. Now based in Ubud, they’ve found not only a new rhythm, but a deeper connection—to themselves, their work, and the world around them.
In this interview, they share how Bali has reshaped their priorities, what daily life looks like in Ubud, and why starting over has felt less like a risk—and more like a return.
Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you originally from?
We’re originally from Sydney. I’m a holistic wellness practitioner specialising in kinesiology and emotional health, and Dan is a personal trainer. We’ve always been drawn to a lifestyle that blends purpose, presence, and adventure.
When did you move to Bali?
We moved to Bali in early 2025, initially to support Dan’s Australian partner visa process. What began as a temporary move has quickly become something more—we plan to stay for at least two years, and now we’re open to staying indefinitely.

What inspired your move?
Dan’s visa process was the spark, but we saw it as a chance to start fresh. We sold everything before leaving and chose to see it as a portal into a new way of living—one that’s slower, more intentional, and aligned with the kind of future we want to create.

How did you come across Our Year in Bali and why was the service valuable to you?
We found Our Year in Bali through a friend and instantly felt held. Simone was more than helpful, she was a lifeline. Her support didn’t just stop once we landed; she’s continued to check in and offer guidance even now.
From the very beginning, she provided invaluable assistance and made what could have been a stressful process feel effortless. Her deep knowledge of the area and expert insights into the local culture and logistics have truly given us the confidence to navigate the entire transition with ease. Her attentiveness, professionalism, and genuine care for our needs have made this experience so much more enjoyable. We’re beyond grateful for her presence in this journey.
Where do you live in Bali?
We live in Ubud. We were drawn to the lushness, calm, and creativity here. It’s a beautiful mix of tradition and innovation, and the community is filled with grounded, open-hearted people. It truly feels like a nourishing place to grow roots.

What are you doing for work?
We’re both building remote, online businesses. I work with clients in the emotional wellness space, and Dan is offering virtual personal training and creating online programs. Having sold everything before moving, we’ve been able to budget wisely and give ourselves breathing room to create work we love.
How does everyday life in Bali compare to back home financially?
The cost of living here allows for a much more expansive life. We can enjoy things like massages, daily movement, and beautiful meals, all without the financial pressure we felt back in Sydney. It’s helped us become more conscious with how and where we spend.

How have you found the medical and health services so far?
We’ve found the healthcare here to be incredible. There are so many caring, knowledgeable professionals and wellness options available. From general care to more holistic offerings, we feel well-supported here.
What does a typical day look like for you in Bali?
Our days begin slowly, usually with a walk or some form of movement. We work from home or cafes throughout the day and make space for nature, connection, and play in between. Evenings are relaxed and often involve cooking, a sunset drive, or a spontaneous adventure.

What are some common misconceptions about Bali, and what would you say to set the record straight?
There’s a common idea that Bali is just for holidaymakers or party scenes, but it’s so much more. It’s a place of depth, spirituality, and community. If you come with respect and curiosity, you’ll find so much more than what’s on the surface.
How have you immersed yourself in the local culture?
We love exploring the land, learning the language, and connecting with the local community. Every day offers an opportunity to slow down and witness the beauty in tradition, nature, and human kindness.

What should other expats think about before making the move?
Come with flexibility and humility. Things won’t always go to plan, but if you’re open to change, Bali will gift you with so much. Honour the local culture, ask questions, and allow space to adjust. And definitely connect with someone like Simone, it makes a world of difference.

Is there anything else about your Bali experience you’d love to share?
Bali has completely shifted our perspective on what life can feel like. It’s reminded us that freedom, beauty, and connection don’t have to wait for someday. They’re available now if you’re willing to take the leap.
